June 5 | World Environment Day

Date : 2024-06-05

World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5, reflects the understanding and attitudes of people around the world toward environmental issues and expresses humanity's yearning for and pursuit of a better environment.

World Environment Day has been held annually since 1973 and has also become an important platform for promoting progress on the environmental dimensions of the Sustainable Development Goals. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), more than 150 countries participate each year. Major corporations, non-governmental organizations, communities, governments, and celebrities from around the world adopt the World Environment Day brand to champion environmental causes.

On April 24, 2014, the Eighth Meeting of the Standing Committee of the Twelfth National People's Congress of China revised and adopted the Environmental Protection Law of the People's Republic of China, which took effect on January 1, 2015. The law stipulates that June 5 of each year shall be Environment Day.

In January 2024, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) issued a statement indicating that the theme of the 2024 World Environment Day campaign focuses on "land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience."
